Clindamycin is a type of antibiotic known as a lincomycin. Lincomycins, including Clindamycin, work by stopping bacterial cells from making protein. This stops cell growth and reproduction, killing bacteria colonies and ending infections. It is often used for patients who are allergic to penicillin and is effective against acne, lung infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and infections of female genitalia.
It is not given for viral infections such as cold or flu, as it does not cure the disease and only helps to grow resistant strains of bacteria.
